A walk on the cliffs of southern England feels more like stepping into a time machine than a holiday walk. It’s not just sand and sea you see. You are looking at the timeline. Today a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast is a geological treasure that spans 185 million years. It opens the door to the Triassic and Jurassic periods, revealing Earth’s history through relentless rain and raging tides.

More than 100 dinosaur footprints were recently discovered on the Portland Peninsula. These dinosaurs ranged from small herbivores to gigantic nine meters long megalosaurs. Just a walk on the beach takes you back in time millions of years.

Why bad weather is good for fossils

We need bad weather. This may sound contradictory for a travel guide, but it’s true here. Fossil collector David Sole, who has worked at Lyme Regis for half a century, explains the mechanism clearly. The rain falls over the rock. The runoff washes the soil away. The remaining debris was washed away by rough seas. The rest is the hard part. The bones. Ammonite.

This erosion has revealed an amazing array of prehistoric creatures. You might find petrified tree roots, crocodiles, snakes, amphibians and ancient ammonite fossils. It is not uncommon to find dinosaur shoulder blades exposed by erosion here.

However, there are strict rules. You can’t dig. This is forbidden. Landscapes provide samples for nature through their dramatic interaction with natural elements.

Asteroid theory

How did land animals become marine fossils? According to the theory, a massive asteroid collision happened 65 million years ago. This event may have caused a large tsunami. The waves push land animals into the deep ocean. They drowned. they sank. They become fossils. The coast of southern England wasn’t always like this. It once slept at the bottom of the deep sea.

Where to go and what to learn

The conservation area covers the coast of Dorset and East Devon. It stretches from Orcombe Rocks near Exmouth to Studland Bay in Dorset. Particular sections include Sidmouth to Seaton Hole, Axmouth to The Cobb in Lyme Regis and the Portland coast. This includes Chesil Beach, Fleet, Portland Harbor Shores, Bowleaze Cove and even Peveril Point.

Transfers from New Swanage to Studland Bay are included in the price, but please note exclusions. The towns of Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Seaton, Lyme Regis, West Bay and Swanage are not themselves geological reserves, but are tourist bases.

This site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. It remains the most important geological record of the Triassic and Jurassic periods in Europe.

Useful tips for visitors

  • Check Weather: Visit after a storm. Look closely at the tide chart. At low tide, the bottom of the rock and the beach are still exposed.
  • Follow the rules: Do not climb unstable rocks. Don’t dig. Look at the fossil, take a photo, and leave it with the next person or museum collector who needs the fossil for scientific purposes.
  • Most popular attractions: Lyme Regis offers the best access to the famous fossil deposits. Cobb is set against the backdrop of a historic harbor. Dinosaur footprints can be seen on Portland’s limestone cliffs.
  • Time of year: Spring and fall have fewer people and more storm erosion. Summer is busy but peaceful. Winter can be dramatic, but it can also be dangerous.

The coast changes daily. One day the path will become clear. Then cover it with a slide. This is a moving landscape. It demands respect. It rewards attention. You come here to see the
