There is a new lounge at Raleigh-Durham International (RDU), and it costs zero dollars. No Priority Pass. No Amex Centurion card. Just walk in.
But if you crave the fizz of Diet Coke, prepare to be disappointed.
That soda is not welcome here. The entire space is branded by Pepsi, and they are being incredibly strict about it. The soft-drink giants don’t share airspace, as evidenced by their ongoing legal wars over trademark rights.
RDU plans to unveil this space inside Terminal 2 later this year. Specifically, airport authorities target an end-of-2026 opening. It will be a 24-hour facility. And yes, you guessed it. Only Pepsi products are on sale inside.
not your daddy’s club
Let’s manage expectations immediately. This isn’t the Delta One Lounge. The rendering shows a lot of Pepsi logos and very little plush carpet.
Don’t expect concierge service. You aren’t going to get fresh shrimp cocktails here.
What you will get is a place to sit down that isn’t one of those uncomfortable plastic airport seats. The space offers standard seating, work stations, plenty of power outlets, and televisions.
It is functional. It is clean. It has two Pepsi vending machines.
“it is a spot where you can sit,
work, and escape the chaos of the main concourse without paying for access.
The soft drink fans here at The Points Guy (yes, there are many of them) view this as a win for Pepsi. They lost their spot as Marriott’s official soda provider just earlier this year. So, keeping the brand inside a major airport terminal helps maintain their relevance among frequent travelers.
how does it compare to premium lounges?
If you want real amenities — shower suites, free alcohol, hot food — you need a ticket class that costs more than a used Honda Civic.
RDU actually has the “Big Three” airline clubs:
* American Airlines Admirals Club
* Delta Sky Club
* United Club
All located in Terminal 2. These are the standard airport lounge setups you already know. You need qualifying credit cards or elite status to enter these specific gated areas.
The new Pepsi lounge sits outside that walled garden.
It is a different product entirely.
why rdu is expanding
This lounge is just one piece of a $2.5 billion modernization project. RDU has grown into a major player. They now handle long-haul international flights with airlines like Air France, Aer Lingus, and Lufthansa.
RDU serves as a focus city for Delta. It is also a top non-hub for American Airlines.
Interestingly, RDU is not the first airport to try a brand-focused free lounge. Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) has a similar pre-security Pepsi area in Terminal 1. It exists right after you leave your bag but before you clear the security checkpoint.
The RDU version is post-security. Inside the secure area. Where it matters if you have a 3 AM flight.
Will the lack of Diet Coke ruin your day? Maybe not. Will a free, clean place to plug in your laptop when the main terminal is a war zone be helpful? Almost certainly.
The airport keeps getting bigger. The crowds keep getting denser.
You just might need a quiet corner to think. Even if it tastes like Pepsi Max.
