Etihad Airways is significantly expanding its presence in the United States, with plans to launch a second daily flight between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Chicago (ORD) starting June 15, 2026. This move will make Chicago the airline’s largest US market in terms of capacity, surpassing even New York. The expansion demonstrates Etihad’s aggressive growth strategy, despite broader industry challenges.
New Flight Schedules
The airline will operate the following schedules using Airbus A350-1000 aircraft:
- EY9: Abu Dhabi to Chicago, departing 2:55 AM, arriving 8:35 AM
- EY11: Abu Dhabi to Chicago, departing 10:00 AM, arriving 3:40 PM
- EY10: Chicago to Abu Dhabi, departing 2:00 PM, arriving 12:30 PM (+1 day)
- EY12: Chicago to Abu Dhabi, departing 9:10 PM, arriving 7:40 PM (+1 day)
Each flight will be operated with a two-cabin A350-1000 featuring 371 seats: 44 in business class and 327 in economy. The airline’s A350 business class is highly regarded for its premium experience.
Why This Matters
Etihad’s decision to prioritize Chicago is notable for several reasons:
- Market Position: Etihad is the smallest of the major Gulf carriers (Emirates and Qatar Airways), yet will become the only one operating multiple daily flights to Chicago. This signals a strategic focus on specific high-demand routes rather than overall fleet size.
- Capacity Leadership: Chicago is only the second North American destination to receive double-daily service from Etihad, after New York. The expanded capacity will make Chicago Etihad’s largest US market.
- Expansion Strategy: Etihad is actively growing its network, and doubling service to Chicago showcases a preference for deepening existing connections over launching new routes.
- Partnership Synergies: Etihad’s codeshare agreement with American Airlines likely plays a role in the expansion, providing connectivity options for passengers traveling beyond Chicago.
- Fleet Allocation: Operating two daily flights to Chicago will consume roughly three of Etihad’s ten A350s, illustrating the airline’s commitment to this route.
The Bigger Picture
The expansion comes at a time when airlines face operational hurdles, including geopolitical instability in the Middle East. Despite these challenges, Etihad is making long-term investments in key markets.
Etihad’s move to double service to Chicago is a bold step that positions the airline for significant growth in the US market. The airline is strategically prioritizing capacity on existing routes, rather than spreading resources thinly across new destinations.
Etihad currently flies to six US destinations: Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, New York, and Washington. The airline’s focus on Chicago demonstrates a calculated bet on demand and connectivity within the US travel network.
