The closure of Spirit Airlines left a significant void at Atlantic City International Airport (ACY), where the carrier previously accounted for nearly all flight operations. However, competition is quickly returning to the New Jersey hub. Breeze Airways has announced it will launch four new nonstop routes from ACY, directly replacing services that Spirit once offered to popular vacation destinations in the Southeast.
This move marks a critical step in stabilizing air travel options for Atlantic City residents and tourists following Spirit’s abrupt exit from the market.
Reclaiming Spirit’s Former Footprint
Breeze Airways will begin its Atlantic City operations with daily flights to Orlando International Airport (MCO), starting July 3. This route serves as a major gateway to Florida’s theme parks and tourism industry.
Later in the year, the carrier will expand its presence with three additional routes, all launching in the autumn and winter:
- Myrtle Beach, SC: Twice-weekly service (Thursdays and Sundays) begins October 22.
- Fort Myers, FL: Thrice-weekly service (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays) begins October 22.
- Palm Beach, FL: Thrice-weekly service (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays) begins December 17.
These announcements come shortly after Breeze was scheduled to begin its initial Atlantic City service, positioning the Utah-based low-cost carrier as a direct successor to Spirit in this market. The arrival of Breeze follows the recent entry of Allegiant Air, signaling a broader trend of budget airlines filling the gaps left by Spirit’s collapse.
A Broader Expansion Beyond New Jersey
While the Atlantic City routes are a direct response to Spirit’s departure, Breeze’s Tuesday announcement included a larger network expansion of 11 new routes spanning Florida, Mexico, and the Caribbean. This growth strategy highlights the airline’s aggressive push to capture market share across multiple hubs.
Key additions in this broader expansion include:
- Virgin Islands: Breeze will launch its first-ever service to St. Thomas, with nonstop flights from Tampa.
- Mexico: The airline will introduce service to Cancun from Richmond, Virginia, marking the city’s first nonstop connection to the popular resort destination.
- Dominican Republic: Three new routes to Punta Cana will be added.
- Pittsburgh, PA: This hub sees the most significant boost, with three new routes allowing Breeze to compete directly with American Airlines on flights to Cancun and the Dominican Republic.
Why This Matters for Travelers
The rapid entry of carriers like Breeze and Allegiant into markets previously dominated by Spirit underscores the resilience of the low-cost travel sector. While Spirit’s bankruptcy removed a major player, it has also opened doors for competitors to adjust pricing and increase frequency on high-demand leisure routes.
For travelers, this competition can mean better availability and potentially lower fares, particularly on vacation-heavy routes to Florida and the Caribbean. However, it also raises questions about long-term stability in the budget airline industry, as smaller carriers continue to navigate operational challenges and shifting consumer demands.
The Bottom Line: Breeze Airways is not just filling empty seats in Atlantic City; it is aggressively expanding its national footprint. By targeting leisure destinations and competing directly with legacy carriers in hubs like Pittsburgh, Breeze is positioning itself as a serious contender in the post-Spirit aviation landscape.
